"A person is deemed healthy when his physiognomy is balanced, his digestion and metabolism are in good working order, his tissue and excretory functions are normal and his soul, mind and senses are in a state of constant inner happiness."
Sushruta
Legendary Ayurvedic doctor, 1000 BC
Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that originated from the Vedic culture of India. Amazingly, it was suppressed during the years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda has lately received global attention - particularly in the west - owing to its wholesome nature and zero risk (when practiced perfectly). According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, which included a comprehensive survey of CAM use by Americans, more than 200,000 U.S. adults had used Ayurvedic medicine in the previous year. Interesting as it may seem, Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine both have their roots in Ayurveda. Early Greek medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical Ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years.
Kaya-chikitsa: "cure of diseases affecting the body" (General Medicine).
Kaumara-bhrtya "treatment of children" (Pediatrics).
Shalya-chikitsa Surgery "removal of any substance which has entered the body (as extraction of darts, of splinters, etc)".
Salakya-tantra "cure of diseases of the eye or ear etc. by sharp instruments" (Ophthalmology / ENT).
Bhuta - vidya "treatment of mental diseases supposed to be produced by demoniacal influence" .
Agada - Tantra "doctrine of antidotes" (Toxicology).
Rasayana-tantra "doctrine of Elixirs .
Vajikarana tantra "doctrine of Aphrodisiacs.
More than a system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). The distinct aspect of Ayurveda is that it offers a body of wisdom designed to help people live a wholesome life with vitality. A basic teaching of Ayurveda is that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit – a great truth in these times of widespread diseases and environmental catastrophes. Ayurveda profoundly emphasizes the inseparable relationship between human beings and nature. It is helpful to understand how Ayurveda views the body and human systems. Individuals are sustained by three life-giving forces, which are called "doshas", These are known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth). These doshas are the inherent intelligence of the body. These critical forces have profound impact on our mind and body. These invisible forces are considered to orchestrate all the functions. Our physical shape, emotional nature, and various capabilities are all influenced by these three critical forces.
For example, it is the influence of Kapha that stimulates the salivary glands when we are exposed to food; it is Vata that aids in food intake; and it's Pitta that is involved in the digestion. Evidently, these forces are supercritical to our existence. It is therefore vital that these doshas exist in a balanced state for the body to function perfectly. Ayurveda views the imbalance of these doshas as the fundamental reason for all our physical, mental, and spiritual problems. Each person possesses a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate. Vata is predominant in Old age, Pitta in the Middle age, and Kapha in Childhood. According to the season, Kapha is predominant early morning, Pitta in the afternoon and Vata late at night. To sustain good health, each person should to maintain proper balance of vata, pitta, and Kapha. Hence it is vital to each individual to identify the body type and follow the right diet and lifestyle. The unique advantage of Ayurvedic treatment is that it helps to restore the dosha balance safely. Ayurveda offers a preventive approach to health, unlike western medicine. Ayurveda offers prevention by detecting and correcting imbalances in the body's innate intelligence – the doshas – before the disease can overpower the individual. The emphasis here is not only on the treatment of disease, but also on prevention through purification and revitalisation. Western medicine is not as effective as Ayurveda in this critical aspect. It basically focuses on the symptoms rather than the root causes. Ayurvedic treatments rely heavily on herbs, herbal extracts, oils and common spices. Currently, more than 600 herbal formulas and 250 single plant drugs are included in the "pharmacy" of Ayurvedic treatments. Historically, Ayurvedic medicine has grouped plant compounds into categories according to their effects (for example, healing, promoting vitality, or relieving pain).

The word Siddha comes from the word Siddhi which means an object to be attained perfection or heavenly bliss. Siddah is one of the oldest medical systems known to mankind. It is believed to have originated in Southern India, as part of the trio Indian medicines - Ayurveda, Siddah, and Uniani. Reported to have evolved over 2500 years ago, the Siddha system of medicine is considered one of the most ancient traditional medical systems.
Siddah sytem was developed by Siddhars, who were the premier scientists of ancient days.
The Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddhah (CCRAS), established in 1978, coordinates and promotes research in the fields of Ayurveda and Siddha medicine. The Government of India, in 2001, set up the Traditional Knpowledge Digital Library as a repository of 223,000 formulations of various systems of Indian medicine, such as- Ayurveda, Siddah, and Uniani.
"Siddha medicine" means medicine that is perfect. Siddha medicine is claimed to revitalize and rejuvenate dysfunctional organs that cause the disease and to maintain the ratio of the tree doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The siddha medicine includes leaves, flowers, fruit, and various roots – all mixed in various proportions. The siddha system has helped decipher many causes of disorders and the formulation of curious remedies from thousands of herbal and herbo-mineral resources.
Like Ayurveda, Siddha teaches that when the normal equilibrium of the trio - vata, pitha and kapha - is disturbed, disease is caused. The factors, that are assumed to affect this equilibrium are environment, climatic conditions, diet, physical activities, and stress. According to the Siddha medicine system, diet and lifestyle play a major role, not only in health but also in curing diseases. NIMS offers authentic Siddha medicine on a variety of illnesses, by a team of highly qualified practitioners.
The Homeopathic principle of treating "like with like" dates back to Hippocrates (460-377BC), but in its current form, homeopathy has been widely used worldwide for more than 200 years. Homeopathy was discovered by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century. Homeopathic remedies are safe and natural. Our treatments are based on holistic healing approach.
Homeopathic medicines (which homeopaths call remedies) are prepared by specialist pharmacies using a careful process of dilution and succussion (a specific form of vigorous shaking).
As yet, science has not been able to explain the mechanism of action of ultra high dilutions in the body, but laboratory experiments have repeatedly demonstrated that homeopathically prepared substances cause biological effects. For example, the hormone thyroxine prepared as a homeopathic '30C' dilution can slow down the process of metamorphosis of tadpoles into frogs.
One theory is that during the production of a homeopathic medicine, the dilution and agitation processes cause an interaction between the original material (e.g. a plant such as Belladonna) and the water and alcohol it is mixed with. This creates tiny new structures (nanostructures) which are the 'active ingredient' and remain present even when the sample has been diluted many, many times.
The principle of treating "like with like" dates back to Hippocrates (460-377BC) but in its current form, homeopathy has been widely used worldwide for more than 200 years.
It was discovered by a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who, shocked with the harsh medical practises of the day (which included blood-letting, purging and the use of poisons such as arsenic), looked for a way to reduce the damaging side-effects associated with medical treatment.
He began experimenting on himself and a group of healthy volunteers, giving smaller and smaller medicinal doses, and found that as well as reducing toxicity, the medicines actually appeared to be more effective the lower the dose. He also observed that symptoms caused by toxic 'medicines' such as mercury, were similar to those of the diseases they were being used to treat e.g. syphilis, which lead to the principle he described as 'like cures like'.
Hahnemann went on to document his work, and his texts formed the foundations of homeopathic medicine as it is practised today. A BBC Radio 4 documentary aired in December 2010 described Hahnemann as a medical pioneer who worked tirelessly to improve medical practice, insisting that medicines were tested before use.
The word acupuncture comes from the Latin acus, which means "needle", and pungere, which means "to prick". Acupuncture is a technique of inserting & manipulating sterilized, fine filiform needles into specific points on the body to relieve pain or to achieve therapeutic effect. The history of Acupuncture dates back to 3000 BC. Evidence of the practice has been found by archeologists in Inner Mongolia.
In its classical form, it is a characteristic component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is one of the oldest healing practices in the world. According to TCM, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of "Qi" (commonly translated as "Vital energy") through channels known as Meridians. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that bodily functions are regulated by Qi which flows through the body. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture describes a family of procedures aiming to correct imbalances in the flow of qi by stimulation of anatomical locations on or under the skin (usually called acupuncture points or acupoints), by a variety of techniques. The most common mechanism of stimulation of acupuncture points employs penetration of the skin by thin metal needles, which are manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation.
Research suggests that traditional forms of acupuncture are more effective than placebos in the relief of certain types of pain and post-operative nausea. Recent systematic reviews found that acupuncture also seems to be a promising treatment option for anxiety, sleep disturbances, and depression.
Acupuncture's use for certain conditions has been endorsed by the United States National Institute of Health, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom, the World Health Organization, and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the USA.
The practice of acupuncture expanded out of China into the areas now part of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan. It is increasingly gaining popularity in many parts of the world - including India. A large number of contemporary practitioners outside of China follow non-TCM practices, particularly in Europe.
A 2012 meta-analysis concluded that acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain.
Another 2012 review found acupuncture to provide significantly better relief from knee Osteoarthritis pain.
Two reviews from 2007 and 2008 had yielded similar positive results. ,The Osteoarthritis Research Society International released a set of consensus recommendations in 2008 that concluded acupuncture may be useful for treating the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee.
Also in 2012, a review found that acupuncture has demonstrated benefit for the treatment of headaches.
A 2011 review of researchers found that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of migraines, neck disorders, tension headaches, and peripheral joint osteoarthritis. Another 2011 review concluded that there was unanimously positive research supporting acupuncture for neck pain, but that little truly convincing evidence existed for other types of pain.
In brief, acupuncture has bee shown to be effective in the treatment of such disorders as Acute sinusitis, Acute rhinitis, Common cold, Acute tonsillitis, Acute bronchitis, Bronchial asthma' Acute conjunctivitis, Central retinitis' Myopia(in children), Gastrointestinal disorders, Neurological Musculo-skeletal disorders, Headache & Migraine , Trigeminal Neuralgia, Facial palsy, Peripheral Neuropathies, Frozen shoulder, Tennis elbow, Sciatica , Low-back pain, Osteoarthritis, etc.
Accupressure - (a blend of "acupuncture" and "pressure") uses physical pressure applied to acupuncture points by the hand, elbow, or with various devices.
Moxibustion - Acupuncture is often accompanied by moxibustion, the burning of cone-shaped preparations of Mugwort or near the skin, often but not always near or on an acupuncture point. Traditionally acupuncture was used to treat acute conditions while moxibustion was used for chronic diseases Moxibustion could be direct (the cone was placed directly on the skin and allowed to burn the skin producing a blister and eventually a scar), or indirect (either a cone of mugwort was placed on a slice of garlic, ginger or other vegetable, or a cylinder of mugwort was held above the skin, close enough to either warm or burn it).
Fire Cupping
Tuina - Is a TCM method of attempting to stimulate the flow of Qi by various bare handed techniques that do not involve needles.
Electroaccupuncture is a form of acupuncture in which acupuncture needles are attached to a device that generates continuous electric pulses. Another term is percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation.
Sonopuncture or Acutonics is a stimulation of the body similar to acupuncture, but using sound instead of needles. This may be done using purpose-built transducers to direct a narrow Ultrasound beam to a depth of 6–8 centimetres at acupuncture meridian points on the body. Alternatively, Tuning Forks or other sound emitting devices are used.
Acupuncture point injection is the injection of various substances (such as drugs, vitamins, herbal extracts into acupuncture point.
Auriculotherapy / Ear acupuncture - Is a form of acupuncture developed in France which is based on the assumption of reflexological representation of the entire body in the outer ear.
Scalp acupuncture, like Auriculotherapy, is based on reflexological considerations regarding the scalp area; it was developed in Japan.
Hand acupuncture - This focuses on the centers around assumed reflex zones of the hand; it was developed in Korea.
Medical acupuncture tries to integrate reflexological concepts, the trigger point model, and anatomical insights (such as dermatome distribution) into acupuncture practice, and emphasizes a more formulaic approach to acupuncture point location.
Cosmetic acupuncture - Is the use of acupuncture in an attempt to reduce wrinkles on the face.
Complementary and alternative medicine, also called CAM, is becoming increasingly popular these days, particularly in the US. Integrative medicine is evolving as a new form of medical practice and is increasingly preferred over conventional medicine - also called "Western" medicine or Allopathic medicine. A wide range of treatments exists under the umbrella term of 'complementary therapy'. Each treatment has its own unique theory and practice.
According to recent research, nearly half the US populations turns to complementary, alternative, and integrative practices to maintain or improve their health. Historically, modern medicine evolved out of an assumption that the mind and body are separate. Disease and illness were viewed as mechanical breakdowns and, generally, it was these breakdowns and the symptoms they caused that were treated. Complementary therapies aim to treat the entire person, not just the symptoms. When you consult a doctor who is an M.D. D.O. or DM, he/ she will likely diagnose you and treat you based on the medical knowledge and experience the person has acquired through conventional education or practice that uses drugs, surgeries, or standard physical therapies.
The approach is different in CAM therapies. They rely on herbs and other "natural" substances, orienting the human mind or physical manipulation to achieve health and wellness.
Integrative medicine, as the name implies, takes an integrated approach. It is a combination approach that takes into consideration complementary, alternative, and conventional medicine to achieve healing. Integrative medicine is the combination of both conventional and CAM medicine. It takes the best practices of both worlds for immense benefit of the patient. There is growing body of evidence that supports the beneficial impact of Integrative medicine. For example, there is evidence that teaching breast cancer patients to meditate - a complementary treatment - in combination with chemotherapy, which is a conventional treatment, can improve the results. It helps the patient reduce stress, improve mood, improve quality of sleep, and reduce fatigue. This is a complementary and integrative approach.
Often, the two terms Complementary and Alternative Forms of Medicine are used interchangeably. However, there is a basic difference when strictly viewed. Alternative therapies are used to substitute a conventional medical approach. For example, If you chose to do yoga instead of going to a physical therapist, it would be considered an alternative therapy.
>> Illness occurs if the body is out of balance.
>> The body can heal itself and maintain a healthy state if given the right conditions.
>> The whole person should be treated, not just the disease or the symptoms.
>> The gentlest therapies must be tried first before harsher ones.
>> There is no quick fix, since healing and balance take time.
>> Natural products are preferable to synthetic ones.
Complementary therapies are used in conjunction with conventional therapies. For example, your doctor might suggest you take Curcumin and / or Chromium Polynicotinate to aid in your blood sugar control, in addition to one of the diabetic drugs. Thus when you are using both approaches, it would be considered complementary.
The U.S. government, on its website devoted to Complementary and Alternative Medicine, categorizes these therapies into five as follows :
Biologically-Based : They include herbal supplements, botanicals, animal-derived products, vitamins, proteins, pro-biotics, and other organic approaches.
Energy Medicine : They include veritable energy like sound, electromagnetic forces, and light or putative energy fields (also called biofields) that work to identify a body's own energy field, also called "chi." Alternative medicine professionals believe that when these biofields are disturbed, it causes illness in the body. Examples of energy medicine are Acupuncture, Reiki, Qi gong, Homeopathy, and Healing Touch.
Manipulative and Body-Based : Examples are Chiropractic, Osteopathic, Reflexology, and Therapeutic massage. These therapies rely on the structures and systems of the body, making adjustments to them to heal symptoms and medical problems.
Mind-Body Medicine : This focuses on the interactions among the brain, behavior, and physical health, such as Meditation, Yoga, Biofeedback, Tai chi, and even Spirituality. Even conventional medicine has long understood the relationship between the mind and the body. Mental health and physical health are intertwined, and this type of approach is being used more and more for pain control, cancer management etc.
Whole Medical Systems that have evolved totally separately from the conventional western medicine. These systems include Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Traditional Chinese medicine, and Ayurvedic medicine.
Without overlooking the advantages of conventional medicine, holistic medicine integrates traditional medical systems (such as Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Siddha, Unani) and complementary therapies (including Yoga, Acupuncture, Reflexology) to help and hasten healing.
Integrative Medicine succeeds by choosing and blending the right medical systems while preserving the strengths and advantages of individual systems. The perfect holistic physician must possess in-depth knowledge of each system, in addition to great wisdom and extensive experience. It is critical to choose the most suitable Complementary Therapies when applying the integrative medicine in each case. When prudently implemented, the integrative approach augments the healing efficacy of all the systems adopted. On the other hand, the approach could prove ineffective if practiced by anyone who lacks the required level of knowledge and expertise. Prudent lifestyle management (designed for each individual) is another efficacy factor.

Naturopathy (also known as naturopathic medicine) is a form of alternative medicine that has gained a great deal of acceptance in many parts of the world - particular in the USA, Canada, and India. Naturopathy adopts holistic approach and non-invasive treatment. Naturopathy, or naturopathic medicine, is a system of medicine based on the healing power of nature. Naturopathy is a holistic system. Naturopathic doctors (N.D.s) or naturopathic medical doctors (N.M.D.s) seek to find the cause of disease by understanding the body, mind, and spirit of the therapies and techniques (such as nutrition, behavior change, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and acupuncture) are employed in naturopathy.
Homeostasis is a self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. If homeostasis is successful, life continues; if it is in disarray, disaster or death ensues. The stability attained by this process is a dynamic equilibrium, in which continuous change occurs, but uniform conditions prevail.
For example, body temperature needs to be kept constant, your blood glucose level must remain in the safe range, and your blood pressure must remain at normal level. On a cold day, your body will conserve heat by constricting the blood vessels close to the skin and directing blood flow to favour internal organs. On a hot day, your body will dilate blood vessels close to the skin and evaporate body heat with perspiration. This process thus maintains healthy internal balance. According to Naturopathy, illness is more likely to occur if the body is not in a state of homeostasis.
There are two areas of focus in naturopathy: one is supporting the body's own healing abilities; and the other is empowering people to make lifestyle changes necessary for the best possible health. Modern naturopathy evolved from the Natural Cure movement of Europe. The term was coined in 1895 by John Scheel and later popularized by Benedict Lust, the "father of U.S. naturopathy".

>>
VIRECHANA (Purgation) - Induced purgation to get rid of Pita related toxins from the body.
>>
